Nature Niños Amplifies Youth Leaders to Policymakers, Outdoor Economics Conference

November 4, 2024

In 2023, Nature Niños identified a critical gap in the New Mexico Outdoor Economics Conference: the absence of youth voices. This conference plays a pivotal role in shaping New Mexico’s outdoor policy and influencing the future of outdoor development across the state. Nature Niños knew the perspectives of young people are essential to building a sustainable future for outdoor recreation and the conservation of our natural spaces.

Sarah Candelaria, Founder and Executive Director of Nature Niños, is a fierce advocate for youth representation, recognizing the profound impact young people have when given a platform. “Our next generation’s voices aren’t just important—they’re necessary,” said Candelaria. “Without their input, we’re missing out on the future of the outdoors.” In 2023, the first-ever Next Generation panel drew an impressive audience from across the state, marking a significant moment for youth leadership in outdoor policy.

The passion and dedication of the youth on that panel left a lasting impression on policymakers. Candelaria reflected, “When kids take a day off school to show up for something they care deeply about, it sends a strong message. Policymakers can’t ignore that.”

Building on that success, in 2024, Nature Niños introduced a new, innovative application process for youth eager to be part of the panel. Alongside the panel application, participants receive invaluable opportunities to develop professional and leadership skills, including interviews with the Nature Niños board. This process empowers both applicants and panelists, strengthening their voices in policy discussions and building confidence to advocate for the changes they want to see in their communities. Youth who aren’t selected are encouraged to re-apply, ensuring that the door remains open for future opportunities.

“I’m constantly blown away by the depth of passion these young leaders bring,” Candelaria shared. “They’re not just advocating for themselves; they’re fighting for the well-being of all kids, both in and beyond their own communities. It’s inspiring, and it shows that this work has lasting power. When you connect with youth like this, you know you’re making an impact.”

Thanks to support from the New Mexico State Outdoor Recreation Division, the 2024 panel showcased diverse youth from all corners of the state—from the rural northern village of Folsom to the southern city of Las Cruces. Each of these youth had firsthand experience with the effects of outdoor policy by participating in outdoor community programs supported by the nationally-celebrated New Mexico Outdoor Equity Fund. “This panel brings together young people who might never have crossed paths,” Candelaria noted, “If we didn’t create opportunities like this, their passion could easily go untapped. We’re committed to making sure their voices are heard—we’re no longer turning our backs on the next generation.”
